ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Anushirwan, AH 745-757 / AD 1344-1356. 2 Dirhams (Silver, 15 mm, 1.30 g), Type V, Van, Khani 51 = 752/3. Within a plain circle, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); the names of the four Rashidun Caliphs around. Rev. Within a looped pointed hexafoil, ‘al-sulṭān al-aʿẓam / Anūshirwān / Khān khalada Mulkuhū / Wān’ (‘The Supreme Sultan Anushiravan Khan. May his kingdom be perpetuated. Van’ in Arabic); around, ‘ḍuriba fī sana iḥdā wa khamsīn khānī’ (‘Struck in the Khani year 51’ in Arabic). Album 2270V. Diler An-825. Extremely rare, apparently one of just two known examples. Struck slightly off center and with areas of weakness and deposits, otherwise, good very fine.
